Accenture and Deloitte list a lot of jobs, and the title hides very different work. The short answer: a consulting-firm FDE builds for the firm’s clients, often on a partner’s platform and inside a pod, and some postings with the title are not engineering at all. In our September 2026 count, 66 of Accenture’s 78 India FDE postings are ServiceNow application support. Why consulting firms are hiring FDEs
The clearest public signal is the platform vendors. Between April and June 2026, Accenture announced forward deployed engineering programs with Google Cloud, ServiceNow and SAP, and Salesforce named both Accenture and Deloitte as launch partners of its FDE partner network. Why these firms are missing from FDE rankings
Our own census of FDE postings read public job boards through their APIs, and it did not reach Accenture, Deloitte or most other large consultancies. Source 14Our analysis: FDE posting censusPublisherfdeinterviewprep.com researchSource typeour analysis of public data So their counts here come from separate searches of each firm’s own site, and they do not rank against the census figures.
What Accenture’s FDE postings ask for
Accenture’s FDE postings are spread across the world. In our September 2026 count of its Workday postings with “Forward Deploy” in the title, 78 were in India, 17 in the United States, 10 in the United Kingdom, 9 in Singapore and 7 in the Philippines. Source 1Accenture Workday job detail records, India FDE-titled postingsPublisherAccenture (Workday)Source typeour analysis of public dataHow we counted
If you apply in India, this matters most. Of the 78 India postings titled Forward Deployed Engineer, our count found 66 that list a ServiceNow module (IT Service Management or IT Operations Management) as the must-have skill and describe the job as an “Application Support Engineer”. Source 1Accenture Workday job detail records, India FDE-titled postingsPublisherAccenture (Workday)Source typeour analysis of public dataHow we countedSource 2Forward Deployed Engineer (Pune, ATCI-5421965-S1971273)PublisherAccenture careers (Workday)Source typecompany job posting The title says FDE; the summary describes application support. Read past the title before you apply.
Thirteen postings in London, Dublin, Madrid, Rome, Munich and Shanghai read very differently: their shared template says FDEs form “the execution spine” of Accenture’s Reinvention Deployment Engineering pods. Source 1Accenture Workday job detail records, India FDE-titled postingsPublisherAccenture (Workday)Source typeour analysis of public dataHow we countedSource 15Forward Deployed Engineer (London, R00339251)PublisherAccenture careers (Workday)Source typecompany job posting It also says the role “is not a consulting role” and “not a project delivery role”, and that assessment rests on demonstrated deployment experience and outcome ownership rather than “CV pattern matching”. Source 15Forward Deployed Engineer (London, R00339251)PublisherAccenture careers (Workday)Source typecompany job posting
Then there is Accenture Federal Services, which posts on its own board. Its APX Forward Deployed Engineer Program embeds engineers with federal clients to adopt AI from labs including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, and its postings say “This is not a traditional consulting role”. Source 16Forward Deployed AI Engineer (AFS, 4710292006)PublisherAccenture Federal Services careers (Greenhouse)Source typecompany job posting
So one employer name covers at least three different jobs:
| Posting group | What the text describes |
|---|---|
| India FDE | ServiceNow application support |
| Europe/China shared template | Deployment pods, outcome ownership |
| Federal (APX) | AI adoption for federal clients |
What Deloitte’s FDE postings ask for
Deloitte’s FDE postings sit in the US. In our September 2026 count, the Deloitte US careers site listed 61 postings with “Forward Deployed” or “FDE” in the title, all in the United States. Source 4Job Search | Deloitte US (keyword: forward deployed)PublisherDeloitte USSource typeour analysis of public dataHow we counted
The titles tell you which part of the firm is hiring. Of those 61, our count found 19 with “GPS” (Government & Public Services) in the title, 10 Cyber postings and 9 “Converge” product-studio postings. Source 4Job Search | Deloitte US (keyword: forward deployed)PublisherDeloitte USSource typeour analysis of public dataHow we counted
Three titles show how specific the requirements get:
- Anthropic Forward Deployed Engineer - GPS. It requires 4+ years of software or data engineering, 1+ years with Anthropic platform technologies such as the Claude API, tool use or Claude Code, 50% travel, and the ability to obtain and maintain a US government security clearance. Source 17Anthropic Forward Deployed Engineer - GPSPublisherDeloitte USSource typecompany job posting
- Palantir Associate Forward Deployed Engineer - GPS. It requires 2+ years of experience plus 1+ years with Palantir (Foundry, AIP or Maven), 50% travel, and clearance eligibility. Source 18Palantir Associate Forward Deployed Engineer - GPSPublisherDeloitte USSource typecompany job posting
- Senior OpenAI Forward Deployed Engineer - GPS. It requires an active US government security clearance at Secret level or above, 7+ years of experience and 1+ years with OpenAI technologies. Source 19Senior OpenAI Forward Deployed Engineer - GPSPublisherDeloitte USSource typecompany job posting
Beyond travel and clearance, check sponsorship: in our count, 27 of the 61 postings mention authorization to work in the US without employer sponsorship. Source 4Job Search | Deloitte US (keyword: forward deployed)PublisherDeloitte USSource typeour analysis of public dataHow we counted
If clearance is the question for you, FDE jobs that need a security clearance walks through the levels and how to answer the recruiter. On pay, the FDE salary guide puts these firms beside other employers’ bands.
The partner platform decides the job
At a product company, the platform is the employer’s own. At these firms it often belongs to a partner, and the posting names it: in our count, Deloitte titles alone name Databricks 8 times and Palantir 7. Source 4Job Search | Deloitte US (keyword: forward deployed)PublisherDeloitte USSource typeour analysis of public dataHow we counted
That changes three things before you talk to anyone.
- The platform is a hard filter. A line such as “1+ years with Palantir” is a requirement, not a nice-to-have. Source 18Palantir Associate Forward Deployed Engineer - GPSPublisherDeloitte USSource typecompany job posting If you have shipped on the platform, its name is your best search term. If you haven’t, a different posting is a better use of your application.
- The platform tells you the daily work. Accenture’s India postings name ServiceNow modules. A Claude API requirement points to building AI applications with tool use. Source 17Anthropic Forward Deployed Engineer - GPSPublisherDeloitte USSource typecompany job posting
- You may work beside the vendor’s own FDEs. The ServiceNow program puts ServiceNow’s FDE team and Accenture FDEs inside the same customer environments. Here is how we read a consulting-firm posting, in order. It is our checklist, not the firms’.
Read a consulting-firm FDE posting
- Which partner platform is named in the title or must-have skills?
- How many years with that platform does it ask for?
- What does the summary call the job (FDE, or something else, such as application support)?
- Which practice is hiring: government, cyber, a product studio, or a platform team?
- What travel figure does it state?
- Does it ask for an active clearance, the ability to obtain one, or neither?
- Does it accept visa sponsorship?

- Partner: Anthropic.
- Years on it: 1+, plus 4+ overall. Source 17Anthropic Forward Deployed Engineer - GPSPublisherDeloitte USSource typecompany job posting
- The job: embed with clients and deliver GenAI solutions inside an FDE pod.
- Practice: GPS, so government clients.
- Travel: 50%. Source 17Anthropic Forward Deployed Engineer - GPSPublisherDeloitte USSource typecompany job posting
- Clearance: must be able to obtain and maintain one.
What this tells you to prepare: one Claude API build story with a limit you hit, a clean clearance answer, and a travel answer. Each is scripted below.
Our lesson on how to read an FDE job posting line by line turns those answers into prep priorities, and who hires FDEs, and under which titles covers platform-tied consultancy titles in more detail.
How the work differs from a product company’s FDE role
The postings point to four differences. Each is a trade, not a verdict.
You work in a pod
Deloitte’s postings describe contributing “independently within an FDE pod while mentoring newer team members”, and in our count 31 of its 61 FDE postings use that framing. Source 17Anthropic Forward Deployed Engineer - GPSPublisherDeloitte USSource typecompany job postingSource 20Forward Deployed Engineer, Frontier GenAIPublisherDeloitte USSource typecompany job posting Accenture’s template calls FDEs the execution spine of its deployment pods. Source 21AFE Cell Lead - AI Advanced Forward Engineering - ManagerPublisherEY CareersSource typecompany job posting
The engagement has a clock
Deloitte describes six- to eight-week sprints. Source 9Deloitte Drives Agentic Industry Transformation at the Speed of AI - Press releasePublisherDeloitte USSource typecompany website If you’re asked “how would you run a six-week engagement?”, answer three things:
- What you cut in week one: “I’d pick the one workflow that costs the client most and park everything else in a written list.”
- What done means by week six: “Real users running it on their own data, with one number we agreed on at the start.”
- What you hand over: “The running system, a runbook their team has used once without me, and a short list of what comes next.”
You cannot change the platform
At a product company, you can file a bug with your own engineering team and sometimes ship the fix. On a partner platform, the fix has to live on top of it: configuration, integration code and workarounds. Your lever is the vendor, not a code change: in the ServiceNow program, ServiceNow’s own FDEs work in the same customer environments. Source 6ServiceNow and Accenture Launch Forward Deployed Engineering Program to Scale Agentic AI Across the EnterprisePublisherAccenture NewsroomSource typecompany blog Say in the interview how you would escalate a platform gap through them while shipping a workaround.
The customer may be a government
Deloitte’s GPS postings, such as its Anthropic FDE role, and Accenture Federal Services’ APX program both point at government clients. Source 16Forward Deployed AI Engineer (AFS, 4710292006)PublisherAccenture Federal Services careers (Greenhouse)Source typecompany job postingSource 17Anthropic Forward Deployed Engineer - GPSPublisherDeloitte USSource typecompany job posting That is where the clearance lines come from, and it is worth deciding early whether you want public-sector work.
How the interview differs, and the AI rules both firms publish
Neither firm publishes an FDE-specific interview loop. Accenture’s company-wide US hiring page says interviews are held by phone, video or in person, the number depends on the role, and some roles include an online activity to assess technical skills. Source 22About recruiting and hiring process at AccenturePublisherAccentureSource typecompany job posting Deloitte US has a company-wide page of case interview tips, not written for FDE roles, which says candidates may be asked to do a case or scenario interview and recommends starting with clarifying questions. Source 23Case and scenario interview tipsPublisherDeloitte USSource typecompany job posting
So prepare from the posting. Here is how we would do it for these firms.
Have the logistics answers ready
Travel, clearance and sponsorship are stated requirements, so a recruiter can check them early. Write one-breath answers before the first call. For travel:
“I’ve read the travel line on the posting and I can commit to it.”
Our lesson on travel and location covers how to negotiate the number.
For clearance, check the citizenship line first. Accenture Federal Services’ FDE postings require US citizenship and the ability to obtain a federal clearance. Source 16Forward Deployed AI Engineer (AFS, 4710292006)PublisherAccenture Federal Services careers (Greenhouse)Source typecompany job postingSource 24Junior Forward Deployed Engineer (AFS, 4715182006)PublisherAccenture Federal Services (Greenhouse job board)Source typecompany job postingSource 25Junior Forward Deployed Engineer (AFS, 4715182006)PublisherAccenture Federal Services careers (Greenhouse)Source typecompany job postingSource 26Forward Deployed AI Engineer (AFS, 4710292006)PublisherAccenture Federal Services (Greenhouse job board)Source typecompany job posting Some postings, such as Deloitte’s Senior OpenAI role, ask for an active clearance, which you must already hold when you apply. Source 19Senior OpenAI Forward Deployed Engineer - GPSPublisherDeloitte USSource typecompany job posting If you are a US citizen without a clearance:
“I’m a US citizen and don’t hold a clearance today. I’ve read that the role asks for the ability to obtain and maintain one, and I’m prepared to go through the process.”
Practice both with our questions on how much travel you can commit to and whether you can get a clearance.
Prepare for platform depth
Deloitte’s Anthropic posting asks for 1+ years with the Claude API or related tools. Source 17Anthropic Forward Deployed Engineer - GPSPublisherDeloitte USSource typecompany job posting We would prepare for two follow-ups: what you built with it, and what you found limiting. Our question which of our APIs have you built with? drills that answer. A strong version names one thing you built, one limit you hit, and what you did about it. An example to adapt, not a real result:
“I built a document triage tool on the Claude API using tool use. The limit I hit was latency on long documents, so I split intake: a small, fast model classified the first page and routed the document within seconds, and full extraction ran in the background on the larger model. Caseworkers got a routing decision right away instead of waiting for the whole document.”
Bring deployment stories, not just a CV
Accenture’s European template says assessment is based on demonstrated deployment experience and outcome ownership. Source 15Forward Deployed Engineer (London, R00339251)PublisherAccenture careers (Workday)Source typecompany job posting Pick a story where you worked inside someone else’s environment and owned the result. Our question tell me about a time you worked inside a customer’s environment gives you the structure.
Treat a case like a client meeting
If you get a case or scenario, ask before you solve, as Deloitte’s own tips page recommends. Source 23Case and scenario interview tipsPublisherDeloitte USSource typecompany job posting Our lesson clarify before you solve covers which questions change the design and which only fill time. To rehearse with a customer who holds back what you don’t ask for, run the free practice case.
Follow the AI rules
Both firms publish company-wide rules, and both are strict.
- Accenture. Its candidate AI policy forbids using AI to complete assessments such as coding challenges unless explicitly stated otherwise, forbids using AI products during interviews to generate answers, and says Accenture uses proctoring tools and AI-detection methods. Source 27Redefining hiring with the power of responsible AIPublisherAccentureSource typecompany job posting
- Deloitte US. It says that, unless Deloitte explicitly says otherwise, candidates must complete interviews by themselves, without help from others or AI tools. Source 28Using AI in the Deloitte recruitment processPublisherDeloitte USSource typecompany job posting
If you are unsure whether a round allows AI, ask the recruiter in writing. Which AI tools are allowed in FDE interviews compares these rules with other employers’, and our lesson on AI rules by company and by stage shows how to ask.
Is a consulting-firm FDE role right for you?
It fits well if:
- you have shipped on one of the named platforms and want to go deeper on it;
- you like variety across clients and time-boxed work with a clear end;
- you want a team around you, with people to learn from and people to mentor;
- you can travel, and, for government work, meet the citizenship and clearance lines.
Think twice if:
- you want to shape the product itself, not build on top of someone else’s;
- you cannot travel much, or need visa sponsorship on a posting that rules it out;
- the posting turns out to be application support, and you wanted to build AI systems.
Coming from consulting and heading the other way? Moving from consultant to forward deployed engineer covers that move.
Whichever way you go, the skills under the title are the same: read the customer’s problem, cut it down, and ship something that works in their environment. Start with The FDE role, decoded, our free first module: its lessons on reading a posting and on who hires under which titles take under 20 minutes together, and its lessons have audio. Then run the free practice case to rehearse a client conversation.
