You already own a customer. You know their architecture, their escalation contacts and the director who calls when something breaks, and now a posting wants you to own a customer’s outcome too. Here is the difference: both roles answer to the customer, and only the FDE writes the fix. This post is the support-side companion to our guide to FDE vs solutions architect.

The short answer

A technical account manager (TAM) keeps a customer’s existing environment healthy, from a support organization, by advising, reviewing and escalating. A forward deployed engineer (FDE) builds and runs new production systems inside the customer’s environment, and the code is theirs. The posting tells you which one you are reading, in three places: the department it sits in, the verbs in its duties, and whether it asks for years of software development.

Read this table as what to check in a posting, drawn from the AWS postings below, not a rule for every employer.

One outage, two jobs

Picture a logistics customer whose nightly batch jobs on the cloud start timing out, and their operations lead is on the phone at seven in the morning.

  • The TAM opens a priority case, pulls in the service team, walks the customer’s engineers through what the logs show, and follows up with a review and a list of recommended changes. The customer’s own team makes those changes.
  • The FDE finds the retry loop hammering a downstream service in the pipeline they built, adds exponential backoff with jitter and a retry cap, plus an idempotency key so a retried write never lands twice, ships it behind a flag, and watches the next night’s run.

Both answer to the customer, and both did the job well. The difference is whose hands are on the code. If the FDE half of that scenario is unfamiliar, the free question on preventing a retry storm walks through why backoff alone still fails.

What a technical account manager posting describes

The clearest TAM posting in our research is AWS’s. Its Sr. Technical Account Manager posting places the role in AWS Enterprise Support, says “This is not a sales role, but rather an opportunity to be the principal technical advisor”, and asks the TAM to “proactively keep the customers AWS environments operationally healthy”. Source 1Sr. Technical Account Manager, TAMPublisherAmazon (amazon.jobs)Source typecompany job posting

Read the verbs, because they carry the job:

  • “Principal technical advisor.” You shape what the customer’s engineers and the service teams do. You are not the one committing the change.
  • “Proactively.” The work is preventing incidents in systems that already exist, through reviews, planning and early warnings.
  • “Operationally healthy.” Success is the absence of trouble: valuable, and hard to show in a coding round.

Support postings that sit close to the TAM read the same way. Glean’s Designated Technical Support Engineer posting says the role is dedicated to select customers, with extended on-call shift timing based on customer contractual obligations. Source 2Designated Technical Support Engineer - WestPublisherGlean (Greenhouse job board)Source typecompany job posting

Lines that mark a support-side posting

  • The department is support, enterprise support or customer success.
  • The duties say advise, review, escalate, keep healthy or drive adoption.
  • The requirements ask about operating or supporting a platform, not building software.
  • Nothing asks you to write or own production code.

What an FDE posting describes

AWS’s Sr Forward Deployed Engineer posting opens with the job in one sentence: an FDE “embeds directly inside a strategic enterprise customer to design, build, deploy, and run AI-powered production systems alongside the customer’s engineering team.” Source 3Sr Forward Deployed Engineer, AWS Forward Deployed Engineering - Job ID: 10517491PublisherAmazon.jobsSource typecompany job posting Of those four verbs, a TAM already knows “run”. The other three are the new job.

The requirements say the same thing in another way. The posting asks for 5+ years of professional software development, plus experience leading agentic and spec-driven development at production scale and with eval frameworks, tooling, pipelines and prompt engineering. Source 3Sr Forward Deployed Engineer, AWS Forward Deployed Engineering - Job ID: 10517491PublisherAmazon.jobsSource typecompany job posting

AI labs write it the same way. Anthropic’s FDE posting, on its Applied AI team, asks FDEs to work within customer systems to build production applications with Claude models, alongside its Post-Sales, Product and Engineering teams. Source 4Job Application for Forward Deployed Engineer at AnthropicPublisherAnthropic (Greenhouse)Source typecompany job posting Post-Sales is a neighbor, not the FDE’s home.

An FDE engagement is built to end

This is the contrast that matters most to a TAM. AWS says its FDE model is designed so customers are self-sufficient when a deployment ends, and that deployments are structured around business results, not billable hours. Source 5AWS invests $1 billion to embed AI forward deployed engineers with customersPublisherAbout AmazonSource typecompany blog Salesforce’s newsroom describes FDEs as aligning to a customer’s business outcomes and staying accountable until those outcomes are met. Source 6How Forward Deployed Engineers Are Proving AI Makes Tech Jobs More HumanPublisherSalesforceSource typecompany blog

In our reading, a TAM’s job has no finish line: keeping an environment healthy is ongoing for as long as the account lasts. An FDE’s work is scoped to an outcome, and part of the job is handing over a system the customer can run without you. That is why our question bank asks you about teaching a customer’s engineers to run what you built.

Accountability does not separate them

Caring about the customer won’t separate them. At the AI Engineer World’s Fair, Sierra’s Natalie Meurer said the FDE role comes in many versions, from DevOps and enablement to custom solutions and data integration, and that the one constant is that every forward deployed engineer is accountable to the customer. Source 7The Dirty Secret of Forward Deployed Engineering (Natalie Meurer, Head of Agent Engineering, Sierra; AI Engineer World's Fair 2026)PublisherAI EngineerSource typerecorded talk or interview A good TAM is accountable to the customer too.

A sharper test comes from The Pragmatic Engineer, which reported, in August 2025, that agent engineer, , and technical delivery engineer come close to the FDE role, and that the difference is that FDEs work with customers and also contribute to the product their company sells. Source 8Forward Deployed Engineers (Gergely Orosz)PublisherThe Pragmatic EngineerSource typenews report The TAM is not on its list, but its test applies. We add one case: does the role change the code, either in your company’s product or in the system the customer runs?

One company, three roles: AWS’s architect, TAM and FDE

AWS is useful because it posts all three roles, and each posting says where it sits. In our September 2026 count, every Forward Deployed title on amazon.jobs was in AWS. Source 9amazon.jobs search, query "forward deployed"PublisherAmazon.jobsSource typeour analysis of public dataHow we counted

Set the three postings side by side:

  • Solutions architect. The Enterprise Greenfield posting sits within AWS Global Sales, asks the architect to work with the sales team on a sales strategy to exceed revenue objectives, lists authoring proofs of concept, and expects 15–20% travel. Source 10Solutions Architect, Enterprise GreenfieldPublisherAmazon (amazon.jobs)Source typecompany job posting
  • Technical account manager. It sits in AWS Enterprise Support, says it is not a sales role, and keeps customers’ environments operationally healthy. Source 1Sr. Technical Account Manager, TAMPublisherAmazon (amazon.jobs)Source typecompany job posting
  • Forward deployed engineer. It sits in AWS Forward Deployed Engineering, embeds with one strategic customer to build and run production systems, and requires 30–50% travel. Source 3Sr Forward Deployed Engineer, AWS Forward Deployed Engineering - Job ID: 10517491PublisherAmazon.jobsSource typecompany job posting

AWS even draws one of the lines itself. Its Senior FDE Manager posting says: “This is not a Solutions Architect management role and not a consulting engagement manager role.” Source 11Forward Deployed Engineering Manager, AWS Forward Deployed Engineering - Job ID: 10517532PublisherAmazon.jobsSource typecompany job postingSource 12Senior Forward Deployed Engineering Manager, AWS Forward Deployed Engineering - Job ID: 10475967PublisherAmazon.jobsSource typecompany job posting

At AWS, the department tells you the job: sales for the architect, support for the TAM, an engineering unit for the FDE. When a posting leaves the department out, ask the recruiter which organization the role reports into, and who owns the code after launch.

When the titles merge

Some postings join the titles. Then the verbs decide.

A TAM who is also the technical lead. SpaceXAI, as xAI now brands itself, posts a Technical Account Manager role that seeks a “Technical Account Manager (TAM) / Solutions Architect (Technical Lead) to own the technical success” of GPU and CPU cluster deployments for customer workloads, on its terrestrial compute infrastructure team. Source 13xAI joins SpaceXPublisherxAI / SpaceXAISource typecompany blogSource 14SpaceX UpdatesPublisherSpaceXSource typecompany websiteSource 15Technical Account ManagerPublisherSpaceXAI (Greenhouse)Source typecompany job posting It asks for 7+ years in large-scale compute, data center or hyperscale infrastructure, and travel of up to 25% to data center sites and customer locations. Source 15Technical Account ManagerPublisherSpaceXAI (Greenhouse)Source typecompany job posting “Own the technical success” could mean advising or building. Its requirements point at infrastructure depth, not software development, so ask what you would change with your own hands.

An FDE with customer success folded in. Baseten’s FDE posting says it is “an engineering role with hands-on coding and software development” that also includes aspects of product management, technical customer success and pre-sales solution engineering. Source 16Forward Deployed Engineer @ BasetenPublisherBaseten (Ashby)Source typecompany job posting Rippling’s FDE manager posting puts the team at the intersection of engineering, customer success and product. Source 17Rippling: Manager, Forward Deployed EngineeringPublisherRipplingSource typecompany job posting Here customer success is part of an engineering job, not the whole of it.

When you cannot tell, run three checks in order:

  1. Who commits the change? If the posting’s verbs are build, deploy, ship or write, it is FDE work. If they are advise, guide or recommend, it is not.
  2. What is required, not preferred? Years of software development in the required list is the strongest single signal.
  3. What happens at the end? A posting that talks about handing over, enabling or making the customer self-sufficient describes an engagement. A posting about ongoing health describes an account.

Our free lesson on reading a job posting line by line runs this kind of check on real postings, and FDE or a solutions architect role in disguise? does the same for the architect side.

How the interviews differ

We found no published description of a TAM interview loop in our research, so this section is our reading of what each posting’s duties imply, plus the little that employers and candidates have said about the FDE side.

The one loop description in our research that covers both roles is Amazon’s, and it is company-wide. Amazon’s interview-loop page, which is not specific to either role, says candidates will likely meet two to seven people, possibly including a Bar Raiser from another team, and that some roles ask for a writing sample or include a short job-related exercise. Source 18Interview LoopPublisherAmazon.jobsSource typecompany hiring page

The FDE side carries an engineering bar. Leo Mehr, Ramp’s Director of Engineering, said in a June 2026 dearCC interview that FDE candidates at Ramp face the same technical bar and must pass the software engineering interview loop. Source 19What is a Forward Deployed Engineer? (FDE Explained) feat. Leo Mehr of Ramp (YouTube auto-generated English captions)PublisherdearCC (Clara Shih), YouTubeSource typerecorded talk or interview Even a customer-success flavored FDE title can test code. One candidate reported on Reddit, in January 2026 and before interviewing, that the recruiter for Palantir’s Forward Deployed Enablement Engineer - Customer Success role described a virtual onsite of a decomposition interview and a technical interview troubleshooting a data pipeline in Python. In our reading of the duties, the prep differs like this:

RoundTAM-shaped prepFDE-shaped prep
TechnicalDiagnose and adviseWrite and debug code
DesignReview an architectureDesign one, then build it
CustomerEscalations and reviewsScope a vague problem
StoriesHealth you protectedSystems you shipped

In our reading, the coding round is the widest gap for a TAM. What FDE coding rounds test sorts the formats in the reports, from practical builds to someone else’s code, and helps you plan drills to match.

The question you will get

If you are a TAM applying for FDE roles, expect some version of “You’ve been advising customers. Why do you want to write the code now?” Don’t answer with enthusiasm for coding. Answer with a moment where advising was not enough:

“On my largest account, I kept recommending the same fix to their ingestion service, and their team never had time to build it. So I built a first version in our sandbox, showed them it worked, and paired with their engineer to ship it. That was the best month I had in the job, and I want the job where that is the work, not the exception.”

It shows you have already crossed the line once. Our post on the customer escalation answer builds a TAM’s strongest material, the escalation story, into a full answer.

Which pays more?

We can’t compare them like for like. As of September 2026, AWS’s Sr FDE posting lists a base salary range for each of its US cities, and says the package also includes sign-on payments and RSUs. Source 3Sr Forward Deployed Engineer, AWS Forward Deployed Engineering - Job ID: 10517491PublisherAmazon.jobsSource typecompany job posting SpaceXAI’s TAM posting lists no salary. Source 15Technical Account ManagerPublisherSpaceXAI (Greenhouse)Source typecompany job posting Our research has no posted pay range for an AWS TAM. For what FDE roles pay across employers, see our FDE salary guide.

Moving from TAM to FDE

The customer half of the job transfers. You already own accounts, run escalations, read unfamiliar environments and keep trust when things break. At least one employer has built its FDE team partly from the customer side: Salesforce’s newsroom said, in March 2026, that Salesforce tripled its FDE team in six months, drawing on engineering, professional services and customer success. Source 6How Forward Deployed Engineers Are Proving AI Makes Tech Jobs More HumanPublisherSalesforceSource typecompany blog

The gap is proof that you ship code. Here is our method for closing it, not a rubric any employer publishes.

  1. Build and run one system end to end. Pick a problem you saw on an account, such as a runbook step people repeat by hand, and build the tool that replaces it. Deploy it, monitor it and run it for a few weeks, so every decision in one project was yours.
  2. Practice timed coding and debugging. Work in the language the posting names, against a clock, on someone else’s code as well as your own. Finding one bug in unfamiliar code, in Pro, is the kind of problem to rehearse.
  3. Rewrite your stories from coordination to construction. Keep the context; change who did the work.

Here is one story, rewritten:

  • Before: “I ran the escalations every time their nightly export failed, and brought in the service team until it was stable again.”
  • After: “Their on-call team was rerunning a failed export by hand three nights a week. I wrote a small service that detects the failure, reruns the export idempotently and pages only if the rerun fails, deployed it in their account, and was on call for it for a month.”

Mistakes to fix in a TAM’s FDE stories

  • “We” that hides who built it. If a service team wrote the fix, say so, then tell a different story where you wrote it.
  • Leading with the relationship. “The customer trusted me” tells them nothing about what you built. Open with “I built X, which did Y”, and put the relationship in the second sentence.
  • Calling a review a build. An architecture review you ran is advising. Expect the follow-up: what did you change with your own hands?
  • Skipping the handover. FDE work ends with a customer who can run the system. Have a story about teaching someone to run what you built.

Rehearse three questions before your first loop: working inside a customer’s environment and your customer-facing experience are free, and teaching a customer’s engineers to run what you built is in Pro. If you get the offer, your first months as an FDE covers what comes next.

Where to start

Module 0, the FDE role decoded, is free: what FDEs do gives you the job in employers’ own words and what success is measured on, and telling FDE apart from its neighbors teaches you to sort a customer-facing posting into FDE, solutions architect, sales engineer or software engineer work by the lines that decide it; the same reading works on a TAM posting. When you want to practice the customer side under pressure, the free practice case puts you in front of an AI customer with a vague problem and a clock.

Questions people ask

Is a technical account manager a sales role?

Can a TAM move into an FDE role?

The customer half transfers: you already own accounts, escalations and trust. The gap to close is showing that you ship code, so prepare for coding rounds and bring a project where you built and ran the system yourself.
