You have two Palantir postings open. One says , the other says , and both postings put you onsite with the customer, working on its data. Source 1Palantir Technologies - Forward Deployed Software EngineerPublisherPalantir Technologies (Lever)Source typecompany job postingSource 2Palantir Technologies - Deployment StrategistPublisherPalantir Technologies (Lever)Source typecompany job posting The short version: the deployment strategist owns the why and the what of the customer’s problem, and the owns the how, which is exactly how Databricks’ Sr. Deployment Strategist posting splits the work. Source 3Sr. Deployment Strategist, FDE - Financial ServicesPublisherDatabricks (careers site / Greenhouse)Source typecompany job posting If you’re also weighing or roles, our guide to FDE vs sales engineer sets them side by side.
The short answer
A deployment strategist is the FDE’s problem-side twin: same customer, same deployment, but the strategist owns the why and the what, and the FDE owns the how. Different seat, different question:
- The strategist asks: what problem is worth solving, for whom, and how will we know it worked?
- The FDE asks: how do we get the data in, build the thing, and keep it running?
Three things change by employer, so read each posting:
- How much code. Palantir’s own strategist postings range from requiring programming experience to calling it a plus. Palantir’s Echo and Delta
Palantir is where the split is clearest. As of September 2026, its New York Deployment Strategist posting is filed under the team label “Echo” and its FDSE posting under “Delta”, while a Software Engineer posting sits under “Dev”. Source 1Palantir Technologies - Forward Deployed Software EngineerPublisherPalantir Technologies (Lever)Source typecompany job postingSource 2Palantir Technologies - Deployment StrategistPublisherPalantir Technologies (Lever)Source typecompany job postingSource 6Software Engineer - Apollo PlatformPublisherPalantir Technologies (Lever)Source typecompany job posting
Here is what the strategist posting asks for, in its own terms:
- Find the question. Go onsite and meet customer analysts to understand the critical questions they need to answer and locate their biggest problems. Source 2Palantir Technologies - Deployment StrategistPublisherPalantir Technologies (Lever)Source typecompany job posting
- Get the engineers the data. Work with Forward Deployed Engineers to integrate the data into a stable and extensible pipeline. Source 2Palantir Technologies - Deployment StrategistPublisherPalantir Technologies (Lever)Source typecompany job posting
- Show it. Build and deliver demos to new and existing customers. Source 2Palantir Technologies - Deployment StrategistPublisherPalantir Technologies (Lever)Source typecompany job posting
- Find the next one. Scope out potential engagements in new industries. Source 2Palantir Technologies - Deployment StrategistPublisherPalantir Technologies (Lever)Source typecompany job posting
In our reading, the Delta owns the middle of that sequence, in code.
Who fits the Echo seat? As reported by Y Combinator’s Lightcone podcast, in a September 2025 episode on YouTube, Bob McGrew said that the classic profile for Palantir’s Echo team was someone from the domain, such as a former army officer or someone who worked deeply in healthcare, who also had to be a “rebel” who sees that current practice is not good enough. Travel. As of September 2026, Palantir’s Deployment Strategist posting requires the ability to travel 25–75%, varying by location and team, while its FDSE posting asks for the ability and interest to travel up to 25%. Source 1Palantir Technologies - Forward Deployed Software EngineerPublisherPalantir Technologies (Lever)Source typecompany job postingSource 2Palantir Technologies - Deployment StrategistPublisherPalantir Technologies (Lever)Source typecompany job posting These are posted ranges, so ask your recruiter what your team actually does.
Volume. In our September 2026 count of public postings, Palantir had 110 Lever postings with FDE-family titles: 75 FDSE or other engineering and 35 Deployment Strategist. Source 8Our analysis: FDE posting censusPublisherfdeinterviewprep.com researchSource typeour analysis of public data At Palantir, the strategist is a hiring line of its own.
Palantir also runs a strategist-only application route. Its “Deployment Strategist, Build to Apply - US Government” postings ask you to build a Foundry and AIP project and submit a demo video, and say that doing so can mean expedited consideration. The same split at other companies

- OpenAI. Colin Jarvis said on a South Park Commons panel, in May 2026, that OpenAI’s FDE team started with only FDEs, then added an “echo” role to take on work around the account, and has begun adding industry experts to its vertical teams. The split also shows up under other names:
- Decagon. As of September 2026, its Senior Product Manager postings sit in a department called “Deployment Strategists”, while its FDE-equivalent role is the Agent Deployment Engineer. When the strategist title means something else
The same two words can describe a sales job.
- Scale. As of September 2026, its three Deployment Strategist postings are quota-carrying capture and business-development roles, not engineering roles, and each states 20–30% travel. Source 5Deployment StrategistPublisherScale AI (Greenhouse)Source typecompany job posting The Washington posting even says “This is not a sales role. This is a full-spectrum capture, deployment, and growth role.” Source 5Deployment StrategistPublisherScale AI (Greenhouse)Source typecompany job posting Read the requirements, not the slogan: that posting asks for years in enterprise technology sales, business development or program capture. Source 5Deployment StrategistPublisherScale AI (Greenhouse)Source typecompany job posting
- Snowflake. Its AI Deployment Strategist posting in Tokyo sits inside the “FDE product org” and sells FDE engagements: it writes statements of work, screens field-originated opportunities for FDE fit, and protects FDE capacity. Source 19AI Deployment Strategist @ SnowflakePublisherSnowflake (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job posting
Even delivery-side strategist roles can touch deals: the ElevenLabs posting includes owning flagship deals. Source 11Deployment Strategist - North America @ ElevenLabsPublisherElevenLabs (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job posting
Before you apply, run the posting through this test. It is our method, not something employers publish.
Is this strategist posting a delivery role or a sales role?
- Does it mention quota, capture, pipeline or statements of work? That leans sales.
- Does it name FDEs or engineers as the partners who build? That leans delivery.
- Does it describe onsite work with the customer’s analysts or users? That leans delivery.
- What does it want you to do with code: build prototypes, read pipelines, or nothing?
- Which department is it filed under: engineering, deployment, product or sales?
How much code a strategist writes
Less than an FDE, but in these three postings, not none:
- Palantir. The New York posting lists programming, scripting or statistical-package experience under “What We Require”, while the US Government posting calls the same experience “a plus”. Source 2Palantir Technologies - Deployment StrategistPublisherPalantir Technologies (Lever)Source typecompany job postingSource 4Palantir Technologies - Deployment Strategist - US GovernmentPublisherPalantir Technologies (Lever)Source typecompany job posting
- Databricks. Candidates are proficient in at least one language such as Python, Java or SQL, and can explore data and work in notebooks. Source 3Sr. Deployment Strategist, FDE - Financial ServicesPublisherDatabricks (careers site / Greenhouse)Source typecompany job posting
- ElevenLabs. The posting asks for basic Python proficiency and experience working with customers in a technical capacity. Source 11Deployment Strategist - North America @ ElevenLabsPublisherElevenLabs (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job posting
Our reading of those three: a strategist writes code to explore data and prototype, and an FDE writes the code that stays running. Our bar for a strategist candidate: answer a customer’s question from a table without help. For example, “which accounts stopped opening the report we built?”:
-- SQLite date syntax
SELECT a.account_id,
COUNT(v.viewed_at) AS views,
MAX(v.viewed_at) AS last_view
FROM accounts a
LEFT JOIN report_views v
ON v.account_id = a.account_id
GROUP BY a.account_id
HAVING MAX(v.viewed_at) IS NULL
OR MAX(v.viewed_at) < DATE('now', '-30 days')
ORDER BY last_view;
Start from accounts, not views: an account that never opened the report has no rows to group, and it’s the one the customer most needs to hear about. Then say what you’d ask next: is that cutoff the right window, and did those accounts get the report at all? That habit of checking what the data leaves out is the kind of data exploration these postings describe. An FDE candidate needs that and much more: the pipeline that fills report_views, and what happens when it breaks. Try building a feature from fitness-app event data to see where your own line sits.
Which one to apply for
Choose by what you want to be measured on. This is our framing, not a rule any employer publishes.
Lean strategist if:
- the work you are proudest of is a decision you changed, a scope you cut or a customer you won over;
- you bring domain depth (clinical, defense, finance, operations) that engineers on the account lack;
- you would rather write the query that proves the point than own the service that runs it.
Lean FDE if:
- the work you are proudest of is a system you built and kept running;
- you want to be the one on the hook when it breaks;
- you would rather debug the pipeline than run the steering meeting.
A quick test: describe your last good project in two sentences. If you can’t get to the code without being asked, look at strategist roles. If you can’t get to the customer without being asked, look at FDE roles.
Say your reason in one line, because you will be asked. For a strategist role: “I want to own what gets built for the customer and be accountable for whether it changed how they work.” For an FDE role: “I want to be the one who builds it and is on the hook when it breaks.” Our free lesson FDE, software engineer, solutions architect, sales engineer: telling them apart walks through the neighboring roles the same way.
How the interviews differ
No employer in our research publishes the two loops side by side, and the reports below disagree.
What Palantir publishes. Palantir’s Getting Hired page says candidates for engineering roles also get a coding question on the phone. Source 20The Phone Interview - Palantir CareersPublisherPalantir TechnologiesSource typecompany hiring page It doesn’t say whether strategist roles count, so ask your recruiter, and be ready to write a query either way. What Palantir FDSE candidates report covers that loop in detail.
One prompt, two openings
Take a made-up decomposition prompt: “A regional hospital network says its emergency department is overwhelmed. Where do you start?”
A strong strategist opening: “Who feels this most: the charge nurse deciding who is seen next, or the operations director deciding next month’s staffing? Those are different products. Let’s pick the charge nurse, agree on what ‘better’ means, say the time from arrival to first assessment, and decide what a first version must show to count as working.”
A strong FDE opening: “Where do arrival and triage records live today, and how fresh are they? I’d get one feed of arrivals into a table, build the simplest queue view the charge nurse could use, and check it against what they see on the floor before I add any prediction.”
Each opening needs the other’s half before the round ends. The strategist still has to name the data. The FDE still has to name the user. Our free lesson the open-ended round and the method on one page gives you one structure for both, and what the decomposition round tests sets out what employers do and don’t publish about it.
Mistakes that cost strategist and FDE candidates
- Pitching a tool before scoping. In the hospital prompt, “I’d build a triage-prediction model” in the first minute skips the user. Fix: spend the first minutes on who the user is and what decision they make.
- Strategists avoiding the data. “The engineers will handle that” reads as someone who can’t work with them. Fix: name the tables and one query you would run, and have a customer-facing story that shows you did it before.
- FDEs skipping the user. A pipeline with no named user is a guess. Fix: ask one “who uses this?” question before drawing anything.
- Giving in to scope creep. Sierra’s post on its Agent Strategists lists pushing back on scope creep as part of keeping deployments on track. Source 16Agent Strategist: Your PhD in applied AI (Andrew Kim)PublisherSierraSource typecompany blog Fix: practice handling a customer PM who adds a dashboard every week.

Questions people ask
What is a deployment strategist?
A customer-facing role that works out the customer’s problem and scope beside FDEs. Palantir’s Deployment Strategist posting has strategists go onsite with customer analysts and work with FDEs to integrate data into a stable pipeline, and Databricks’ Sr. Deployment Strategist posting calls the role the product manager for the customer’s problem.Source 2Palantir Technologies - Deployment StrategistPublisherPalantir Technologies (Lever)Source typecompany job postingSource 3Sr. Deployment Strategist, FDE - Financial ServicesPublisherDatabricks (careers site / Greenhouse)Source typecompany job posting
Do deployment strategists need to code?
It depends on the posting. Palantir’s New York Deployment Strategist posting requires programming, scripting or statistical-package experience, while its US Government posting calls the same experience a plus. Is a deployment strategist a sales role?
At some employers the title is.
