The module’s opening lesson started from the customer’s environment. Some rounds hand you no customer at all: design a booking system, an alerting pipeline, a rate limiter. By the end you can tell boxes from classes in the first minute, run either, and still hand the result to a customer.

Who runs classic design rounds, by the evidence

Prepare it as a round of its own: some companies publish one for all engineers, and some candidates report one.

Rippling, Snowflake and Notion publish system design in their company-wide engineering interviews, and Adobe lists it among what candidates for technical roles may face; none of the four is specific to FDEs. Two candidates for C3 AI FDE roles reported classic prompts on Reddit in August 2026: design “Google Cars”, like Google Flights for comparing cars, and a 45-minute round on real-time alerts for malfunctions. Ask the recruiter which you’ll get:

Candidate: Is the design round a customer scenario or a classic design prompt, and is it architecture or classes?
