Search for OpenAI jobs and you’ll find two careers pages: openai.com/careers and deploy.co/careers. The second belongs to the OpenAI Deployment Company, a separate company OpenAI launched in May 2026 to embed Forward Deployed Engineers in organizations. Its own job postings call it “DeployCo”, so search for that name too. The first thing to find out about any OpenAI FDE opening is which of the two it sits in, because the scope of the job differs.

Is the OpenAI Deployment Company hiring FDEs?

Yes. As of September 2026, deploy.co/careers lists Forward Deployed Engineer postings for the US, UK, EU, Singapore and Australia, plus a listing called “Apply with Your Team”. Where each FDE posting sits:

On pay, as of September 2026 the US posting lists a salary range of $170K–$400K with equity listed separately, and each regional posting lists its own salary range. What the US posting asks for

The US role is hybrid, three days a week in the office, with relocation assistance and up to 50% travel. Source 3Forward Deployed Engineer - USPublisherOpenAI Deployment Company (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job posting It asks for 4+ years of engineering experience. Source 3Forward Deployed Engineer - USPublisherOpenAI Deployment Company (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job posting

The scope is what stands out. It describes a Founding Forward Deployed Engineer who acts as technical lead on customer deployments, works as a player-coach, and will “ramp quickly toward management responsibilities”. Source 3Forward Deployed Engineer - USPublisherOpenAI Deployment Company (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job posting It also asks for “disciplined standardization-versus-customization decisions instead of defaulting to bespoke work”. Source 3Forward Deployed Engineer - USPublisherOpenAI Deployment Company (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job posting

In plain terms: they want someone who ships for one customer and notices what the next customer will need too.

What the UK posting asks for

The UK posting is hybrid with “customer travel shaped by deployment needs”, and names the stack: Python and SQL, plus production LLM experience with agents, retrieval and evaluation. Source 4Forward Deployed Engineer - UKPublisherOpenAI Deployment Company (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job posting It also describes a hands-on player-coach who writes code, reviews designs and mentors engineers. Applying as a team

The “Apply with Your Team” listing invites established teams of two to five people to apply together. What OpenAI announced

OpenAI’s announcement makes four points you can repeat with confidence.

Two details need care, because they are where people repeat more than the sources say.

The Tomoro deal. As published, the acquisition was subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, and was expected to close in the coming months. As of September 2026, we found no confirmation that it has closed, though tomoro.ai now redirects to deploy.co. Source 1OpenAI launches the OpenAI Deployment Company to help businesses build around intelligencePublisherOpenAISource typecompany blogSource 9News | OpenAI Deploy Co.PublisherOpenAI Deployment CompanySource typecompany website Say “agreed to acquire”, not “acquired”.

The valuation. The Next Web reported that the Deployment Company is a $14 billion subsidiary, but OpenAI’s own announcement states no valuation. Source 10OpenAI acquires Tomoro as founding piece of $14 billion Deployment CompanyPublisherThe Next WebSource typenews report If you mention a number in an interview, say where it came from, or leave it out.

How an engagement starts

This is the part that matters most for your preparation, because it tells you what the work looks like on day one.

OpenAI says a typical Deployment Company engagement will begin with a focused diagnostic of where AI can create the most value, followed by a small number of priority workflows chosen with the customer’s leadership and operating teams. Source 1OpenAI launches the OpenAI Deployment Company to help businesses build around intelligencePublisherOpenAISource typecompany blog FDEs then work inside the organization to design, build, test and deploy production systems. Source 1OpenAI launches the OpenAI Deployment Company to help businesses build around intelligencePublisherOpenAISource typecompany blog

Read that as a job description and it asks for three skills:

  • Diagnosis. Finding where value is, across a whole organization, before anyone builds.
  • Choosing. Narrowing to a few workflows, with leaders and the people who run the work.
  • Shipping. Taking those workflows all the way to production, inside someone else’s systems.

What a diagnostic sounds like in the room

Here is a short illustration about a fictional customer, using our method, not OpenAI’s. A logistics company’s COO says: “We want AI across dispatch, invoicing and customer emails.” A weak response starts designing an . A strong one sorts the ideas first.

For each candidate workflow, ask four things:

  1. Who owns it? A workflow with no owner never ships.
  2. What does it cost today? Hours, errors or wait time the customer already measures.
  3. Is the data reachable? Can you read the inputs this month, or does it start with a security review?
  4. What happens when the model is wrong? Who catches it, and how bad is a miss?

Then say your choice out loud, with the reason:

“Of the ideas on the board, I’d start with invoice exceptions: the carrier invoices that don’t match the agreed rate. The finance lead owns them, her team already counts how many they clear each week, the invoices and rate cards sit in two systems we can read now, and a wrong suggestion gets caught by a clerk before anything is paid. Dispatch is bigger, but a wrong call there strands a truck, so it goes second.”

That answer shows diagnosis, choosing and a first version you can ship. Our lesson on going from discovery call to technical proposal teaches the full sequence, and stakeholders and success metrics covers the “who owns it, how is it measured” half. When you have picked the workflow, our post on scoping a vague AI request takes the next step: an eval set, human review and a launch criterion.

You can rehearse the same move in the free practice case, against a customer who holds back facts until you ask for them.

Two places to be an FDE at OpenAI

OpenAI still runs its own FDE team. OpenAI describes that team as partnering with customers to turn research breakthroughs into production systems, at the intersection of customer delivery and core platform development. Source 11Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) - SF | OpenAIPublisherOpenAISource typecompany job posting Its San Francisco FDE posting says FDEs measure success through production adoption, measurable workflow impact, and eval-driven feedback that changes product and model roadmaps. Source 11Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) - SF | OpenAIPublisherOpenAISource typecompany job posting

Colin Jarvis, who leads that team, said on a South Park Commons panel in May 2026 that it works only about 10 engagements at a time and has to say no more often than yes. Source 12The Future of Forward Deployed Engineering | OpenAI, Ramp, Nominal, DatalandPublisherSouth Park Commons (YouTube)Source typerecorded talk or interview The Engineering Leadership newsletter reported that Jarvis said OpenAI intends to keep its internal FDE org relatively small and focused on product and research insight, while expanding the Deployment Company. Source 13Inside OpenAI’s Forward Deployed Engineer RolePublisherEngineering Leadership (Gregor Ojstersek)Source typenews report That is a newsletter’s account of a conversation, not an OpenAI statement.

Field feedback is not the dividing line

It is tempting to say the internal team feeds the roadmap and DeployCo just delivers. The postings don’t support that. DeployCo’s US posting says field work should inform roadmap priorities, and its UK posting asks FDEs to surface field insights to Product and Research. Source 3Forward Deployed Engineer - USPublisherOpenAI Deployment Company (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job postingSource 4Forward Deployed Engineer - UKPublisherOpenAI Deployment Company (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job posting Both organizations want the feedback story.

What the DeployCo US posting adds is scope: a founding, player-coach role heading toward management, and a job of deciding what to standardize across customers instead of building each one from scratch. What one founding FDE says he would assess

On MBN Solutions’ A Class Act podcast in September 2026, Tom McLaughlin, a founding FDE at the Deployment Company, said the things he would want to assess are how well you orchestrate agents, build feedback loops and build your own tools. Source 15The Role of The Forward Deployed Engineer with Tom McLaughlin, FDE at The OpenAI Deployment CompanyPublisherMBN Solutions (YouTube)Source typerecorded talk or interview The MBN Solutions episode notes that guest views are their own, not the employer’s. Source 15The Role of The Forward Deployed Engineer with Tom McLaughlin, FDE at The OpenAI Deployment CompanyPublisherMBN Solutions (YouTube)Source typerecorded talk or interview Speaking personally on the same MBN Solutions episode, he said he would have major concerns about a role that asked him to write code by hand all the time. Source 15The Role of The Forward Deployed Engineer with Tom McLaughlin, FDE at The OpenAI Deployment CompanyPublisherMBN Solutions (YouTube)Source typerecorded talk or interview

This is one person’s view, not a published list of hiring criteria. It is still a cheap thing to prepare for. Have one concrete story for each skill:

  • Orchestrating agents: a task you split across several AI agents or tools, and how you checked their work.
  • Feedback loops: an eval or check that ran on every change, and a failure it caught.
  • Your own tools: a script or internal tool you built because the existing one was too slow.

The question on how you use AI coding tools is the natural place for the first and third stories. The evaluation harness question drills the second.

Anthropic’s services company, for comparison

OpenAI is not the only lab building a services arm. In May 2026, Anthropic announced a new AI services company with Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman and Goldman Sachs to serve mid-sized companies. Source 16Building a new enterprise AI services company with Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, and Goldman SachsPublisherAnthropicSource typecompany blog The announcement says Anthropic’s “Applied AI engineers” will work alongside the firm’s engineers, and it does not use the term forward deployed engineer. Source 16Building a new enterprise AI services company with Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, and Goldman SachsPublisherAnthropicSource typecompany blog

The practical lesson: if you search job boards only for “forward deployed”, you will miss work of the same shape under other titles. Our lesson on who hires FDEs, and under which titles lists the variants to search for. If Anthropic is on your list too, our post on answering “Why Anthropic?” shows how to build that answer for the FDE role.

What changes in how you apply and prepare

Before you apply to an OpenAI FDE role

  • Find out which organization the role sits in: OpenAI or DeployCo.
  • Read the live posting for pay, travel and office days.
  • Write a separate “why” answer for that organization.
  • Prepare a diagnostic story: a time you chose what to build first across many requests.
  • Prepare a field-feedback story: something you saw at a customer that changed a product.
  • Prepare a reuse story: something you built once and turned into a shared component.
  • Know the APIs you have built with, and their limits.

Ask which organization, in these words. On the recruiter call: “Is this role on OpenAI’s Forward Deployed Engineering team, or with the OpenAI Deployment Company? And how does the team decide which customer engagements to take on?” The second question is useful either way: the answer tells you what the first months will look like.

Have the field-feedback story ready for both. The internal posting counts roadmap feedback as part of success, and DeployCo’s postings ask for it too. Source 3Forward Deployed Engineer - USPublisherOpenAI Deployment Company (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job postingSource 4Forward Deployed Engineer - UKPublisherOpenAI Deployment Company (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job postingSource 11Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) - SF | OpenAIPublisherOpenAISource typecompany job posting The field feedback question is where to practise it.

Tailor the “why”. For the internal team, anchor on its focus: turning research into production systems with a small number of customers. For DeployCo, anchor on the founding, player-coach scope and on standardizing what repeats across customers. Source 3Forward Deployed Engineer - USPublisherOpenAI Deployment Company (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job posting A two-sentence version might sound like this:

“I’ve shipped the same kind of document-triage workflow for three clients, and each time I turned the repeated parts into a shared library. A founding role whose job includes turning field patterns into reusable deployment building blocks is that same work at a bigger scale.”

Our why this company question has the full structure; fill it with the right organization’s facts and your own numbers.

Rehearse the first month. Both organizations embed you with customers, so expect some version of “what would you do in your first weeks with a new customer?” Work through the first-month plan question with the diagnostic above as your opening move.

Know the platform. You will be building on OpenAI’s products inside someone else’s systems, so be ready for the question “Which of our APIs or products have you built with, and what did you find limiting?” For the assessment itself, OpenAI’s interview guide says skills-based formats vary by team and may include pair coding, take-home projects or technical tests. Source 17Interview Guide | OpenAIPublisherOpenAISource typecompany hiring page Our post on the OpenAI FDE take-home sets out one routine that works whichever format you get; none of the reports it covers names the Deployment Company, and we found none that does.

Mistakes to avoid

  • “I’m excited to join OpenAI’s FDE team” said to a DeployCo recruiter. It tells them you didn’t check.
  • Treating DeployCo as delivery only. Its postings ask for feedback to Product and Research, so bring a story that shows it. Source 3Forward Deployed Engineer - USPublisherOpenAI Deployment Company (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job postingSource 4Forward Deployed Engineer - UKPublisherOpenAI Deployment Company (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job posting
  • Pitching yourself as a solo builder for a founding role. The US posting describes a player-coach heading toward management, so show a time you raised a team’s bar. Source 3Forward Deployed Engineer - USPublisherOpenAI Deployment Company (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job posting
  • Stating the valuation as fact, or saying Tomoro “was acquired”. The valuation is a press report, and the deal was announced subject to closing conditions. • Quoting the podcast as policy. McLaughlin spoke for himself. Use his three skills to prepare, not as a claim about how DeployCo hires.

What is not known yet

Keep these open questions in mind, and ask about them rather than assuming.

  • How DeployCo interviews. We found no published description of its loop, and nothing comparing it with the internal team’s.
  • How levels map to the bands. The postings give one wide salary range each, not a range per level. Source 3Forward Deployed Engineer - USPublisherOpenAI Deployment Company (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job postingSource 4Forward Deployed Engineer - UKPublisherOpenAI Deployment Company (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job postingSource 5Forward Deployed Engineer - EUPublisherOpenAI Deployment Company (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job postingSource 6Forward Deployed Engineer - SGPPublisherOpenAI Deployment Company (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job postingSource 7Forward Deployed Engineer - AUSPublisherOpenAI Deployment Company (Ashby job board)Source typecompany job posting Ask the recruiter where your level sits.
  • How the two organizations divide customers. The published material describes each one’s focus, not where the line falls between them.

Whichever organization you pick, the diagnostic is the skill both start with. Our lesson on going from discovery call to technical proposal teaches it step by step, and the free practice case lets you run it against a customer who holds facts back.
