Every few weeks another headline says postings grew by some enormous percentage, and no two headlines quote the same figure. If you are deciding whether to point your job search at FDE roles, you want to know which of those numbers to believe. If the job itself is still fuzzy, start with our guide to what a forward deployed engineer is; this post is about the numbers.

Yes, FDE demand is real: every growth figure in our research points up, and in its September 2026 analysis, Plank, a staffing firm, counted 1,333 live FDE postings across 565 companies. Source 1FDE Job Market: 1333 Forward-Deployed Engineer RolesPublisherPlank (IDYIA, LLC), staffing firmSource typeindependent analysis But the headline growth figures measure different things, over different months, in different units, so you cannot set one beside another. Below, each figure gets its source, its window and its unit, then what the numbers mean for your search and what to say if the market comes up in an interview.

The short answer: demand grew, and the headlines still mislead

Postings for the role grew fast. In Bloomberry’s analysis of postings titled “forward deployed engineer” from January to October 2025, the count was up 1,165% on the same months of 2024. Source 2What I learned analyzing 1K forward deployed engineer jobsPublisherBloomberry (Henley Wing Chiu), published Nov 18 2025, updated Jan 25 2026Source typeindependent analysis It is one of the clearer figures: it names its dataset, window and unit.

So hold three things at once:

  • Postings grew. Every dataset that measures growth agrees on the direction.
  • The size of the growth depends on who measured, what, and when. That is why the figures disagree.
  • None of them tells you your odds. No figure here counts applicants, and a posting is a request to hire, not a hire.

For which employers built FDE teams and when, read the free lesson Why the role spread when it did. It makes the case this post expands on: in an interview, a company’s own dated decision is better evidence than any market multiple.

Every growth figure, with its source, window and method

Before you trust a figure, ask it five questions. This is our reading method, not an industry standard:

  1. Who measured it, and do they sell something related?
  2. What is the unit: postings, an index, “positions”, or answers to a survey?
  3. What is the window, and what is it compared with?
  4. Is it a measurement or a projection?
  5. What does it cover: one job site, one marketplace, employers’ own boards?

Bloomberry: an analysis of postings

Bloomberry’s analysis used 1,000 FDE job postings supplied by Revealera, a jobs data provider. Source 2What I learned analyzing 1K forward deployed engineer jobsPublisherBloomberry (Henley Wing Chiu), published Nov 18 2025, updated Jan 25 2026Source typeindependent analysis The analysis compared postings titled “forward deployed engineer” from January through October 2025 with the same months of 2024. Source 2What I learned analyzing 1K forward deployed engineer jobsPublisherBloomberry (Henley Wing Chiu), published Nov 18 2025, updated Jan 25 2026Source typeindependent analysis

  • Unit: postings titled “forward deployed engineer”. Bloomberry does not say whether it matched the exact title or any title containing it. Either way, a title such as “” falls outside it, and one written only as “FDE” may too.
  • Window: the same months of two years, which reduces seasonal swings.

Lightcast, reported by Fortune

According to Lightcast data reported by Fortune, postings for “forward-deployed” engineers rose more than 1,000% from January to August 2026 against the same months of 2025, and more than 4,600% against 2023. LinkedIn, reported by Computerworld

In a LinkedIn study reported by Computerworld in May 2026, FDE positions grew 42-fold between 2023 and 2025, against 13-fold for AI engineer jobs. Paraform: one recruiting marketplace

In its analysis of its own platform, Paraform, a recruiting marketplace, says FDE postings there grew 350% year over year from Q1 2025 to Q1 2026. Indeed, relayed three ways

Three figures come from Indeed data, each relayed by a different outlet over a different window:

One job site, three windows. They neither confirm nor contradict each other; they answer different questions.

A projection, not a measurement

A Christian & Timbers study reported by TechCrunch projects FDE demand to rise 2,100% by the end of 2026. The figures side by side

The Indeed figures that were reported as job counts

Indeed data reported by Business Insider put FDE postings 543% above January 2025 levels in April 2025, and 5,230% above January 2025 levels in April 2026, which Business Insider describes as roughly 729% year over year. Source 11Job postings for this tech role have grown more than 700% in the last yearPublisherBusiness Insider (syndicated on AOL), Cadie Thompson and Lakshmi Varanasi, updated 18 May 2026Source typenews reportSource 12The rise of the forward-deployed engineer (FDE)PublisherLeadDevSource typenews report Then Business Insider corrected its story: the Indeed figures are index values relative to a January 2025 baseline, not counts of individual job posts. Source 11Job postings for this tech role have grown more than 700% in the last yearPublisherBusiness Insider (syndicated on AOL), Cadie Thompson and Lakshmi Varanasi, updated 18 May 2026Source typenews report

What an index value is

An index picks one month as its base and expresses every later month relative to it. It does not tell you how many postings existed in either month, and a huge percentage on a small base can still be a modest number of jobs.

Check Business Insider’s arithmetic

The year-over-year figure reported by Business Insider follows from its own two figures, read as percent above the January 2025 base: Source 11Job postings for this tech role have grown more than 700% in the last yearPublisherBusiness Insider (syndicated on AOL), Cadie Thompson and Lakshmi Varanasi, updated 18 May 2026Source typenews reportSource 12The rise of the forward-deployed engineer (FDE)PublisherLeadDevSource typenews report

# Read as percent above the base
apr_2025 = 1 + 5.43   # 543% above base
apr_2026 = 1 + 52.30  # 5,230% above base
print(f"{apr_2026 / apr_2025 - 1:.0%}") # 729%
# If they were raw index values on a base of 100
print(f"{5230 / 543 - 1:.0%}") # 863%

Indeed’s public postings index sets its base to 100 (Indeed Hiring Lab’s job postings tracker). An index value is not the same as a percent above the base, so without the raw values you cannot tell which one Business Insider was given. That is another reason to quote an index only as an index: one dataset, one base, and never beside Bloomberry’s or Lightcast’s figures.

Search-result counts are not job counts either

Plank, a staffing firm, says in its analysis of the FDE job market that LinkedIn’s “56,000+“ FDE result count comes from broad keyword matching, and that Indeed’s count drops about 70-fold when restricted to the exact title. Source 1FDE Job Market: 1333 Forward-Deployed Engineer RolesPublisherPlank (IDYIA, LLC), staffing firmSource typeindependent analysis Whoever makes the point, it holds: a search result count is not a job count, so filter on the title.

How many FDE postings exist right now

Growth figures say how fast; counts say how many. Our research holds three counts.

Plank’s census. In its analysis of the FDE job market, updated in September 2026, Plank’s census collected 1,333 live FDE postings across 565 companies, from company ATS boards, a job aggregator, and sweeps of Y Combinator, Wellfound, LinkedIn, Indeed and VC job boards. Source 1FDE Job Market: 1333 Forward-Deployed Engineer RolesPublisherPlank (IDYIA, LLC), staffing firmSource typeindependent analysis Plank’s analysis treats every count as a floor. Source 1FDE Job Market: 1333 Forward-Deployed Engineer RolesPublisherPlank (IDYIA, LLC), staffing firmSource typeindependent analysis Plank is a staffing firm, but it states its method, which is what lets you read it.

Plank’s exact-title estimate. In the same analysis, Plank estimates that roles titled exactly “forward deployed engineer” number about 1,000 to 1,400 worldwide after de-duplication. Source 1FDE Job Market: 1333 Forward-Deployed Engineer RolesPublisherPlank (IDYIA, LLC), staffing firmSource typeindependent analysis

Our count. In our September 2026 count of postings on 103 employers’ job boards, 806 live postings from 92 employers had titles matching the FDE patterns. Source 13Our analysis: FDE posting censusPublisherfdeinterviewprep.com researchSource typeour analysis of public data The patterns our count used are “forward deployed”, “deployed engineer”, “deployment strategist”, “ deployment engineer” and the abbreviation “FDE”, and one title can match more than one. Source 13Our analysis: FDE posting censusPublisherfdeinterviewprep.com researchSource typeour analysis of public data The unit is a live posting on one day, so our count says nothing about growth. The methodology page sets out how we ran it.

In our count, the employers with the most matching postings were Databricks (117), Palantir (110), Salesforce (92), Google (57), ElevenLabs (38), Microsoft (29) and OpenAI (22). Source 13Our analysis: FDE posting censusPublisherfdeinterviewprep.com researchSource typeour analysis of public data The boards we counted exclude Accenture, Deloitte and other large consultancies. Source 13Our analysis: FDE posting censusPublisherfdeinterviewprep.com researchSource typeour analysis of public data

Why the counts differ

Plank’s analysis and our count were both taken in September 2026, and they still give different totals. Source 1FDE Job Market: 1333 Forward-Deployed Engineer RolesPublisherPlank (IDYIA, LLC), staffing firmSource typeindependent analysisSource 13Our analysis: FDE posting censusPublisherfdeinterviewprep.com researchSource typeour analysis of public data That gap is method, not change. Plank’s analysis reads company ATS boards and adds a job aggregator and sweeps of LinkedIn, Indeed and other boards. Source 1FDE Job Market: 1333 Forward-Deployed Engineer RolesPublisherPlank (IDYIA, LLC), staffing firmSource typeindependent analysis Our count reads only the 103 employers’ own careers sites our script can reach, some of them through their keyword search. Source 13Our analysis: FDE posting censusPublisherfdeinterviewprep.com researchSource typeour analysis of public data Neither is wrong, and subtracting one from the other tells you nothing.

Same month, three counts: Palantir

In September 2026, a Fortune news report said Palantir had around four dozen open forward-deployed positions. Source 3One of the fastest-growing jobs in Silicon Valley sends engineers straight to customers’ offices...PublisherFortune (Preston Fore)Source typenews report Plank’s census counted 75 live Palantir FDE postings. Source 1FDE Job Market: 1333 Forward-Deployed Engineer RolesPublisherPlank (IDYIA, LLC), staffing firmSource typeindependent analysis Our September 2026 count found 110. Source 13Our analysis: FDE posting censusPublisherfdeinterviewprep.com researchSource typeour analysis of public data The three counts came from different sources, with different title nets, so the spread tells you about the counters before it tells you anything about Palantir.

Part of the gap is the title net. Our count also catches “deployed engineer” and “deployment strategist” titles, which a narrower search would miss. Source 13Our analysis: FDE posting censusPublisherfdeinterviewprep.com researchSource typeour analysis of public data Salesforce shows the same gap: 26 in Plank’s analysis against 92 in our count. Source 1FDE Job Market: 1333 Forward-Deployed Engineer RolesPublisherPlank (IDYIA, LLC), staffing firmSource typeindependent analysisSource 13Our analysis: FDE posting censusPublisherfdeinterviewprep.com researchSource typeour analysis of public data

The same trap works across months. Figures reported by Computerworld in May 2026 put Google at 1,513 openings for the role; our September 2026 count found 57 matching Google postings. Source 4Here’s one career emerging from the AI shift: ‘forward-deployed engineers’PublisherComputerworld (Agam Shah)Source typenews reportSource 13Our analysis: FDE posting censusPublisherfdeinterviewprep.com researchSource typeour analysis of public data That is not a hiring cut: the month, the unit and the method all differ. If Google is on your list, read its own careers site in the week you apply.

The rule: never compare growth from different datasets

This is our rule, and our research follows it: compare a figure only with another from the same dataset, measured the same way. Every pair of figures above fails at least one of the five questions.

Three mistakes, and the fix for each

  1. Stacking figures as if they agree. They agree on direction and nothing else. Fix: quote one, with its source and window.
  2. Reading an index as jobs, as the Business Insider story first did. Fix: call it an index, or leave it out.
  3. Reading a snapshot as a trend. A one-day count, ours or anyone’s, cannot show growth. Fix: only two counts from the same method, on different dates, show change.

What to say if it comes up in an interview

When an interviewer asks why you want this role now, a growth statistic is a weak answer: anyone can quote it, and it says nothing about the company. The company’s own dated decision does.

If you do mention the market, mention one figure the way an analyst would, then move to the company. For an OpenAI interview:

“In Bloomberry’s analysis, postings titled forward deployed engineer from January to October 2025 were up 1,165% on the same months of 2024. Source 2What I learned analyzing 1K forward deployed engineer jobsPublisherBloomberry (Henley Wing Chiu), published Nov 18 2025, updated Jan 25 2026Source typeindependent analysis That tells me the role spread. What tells me it’s the right move is your decision in May to set up the Deployment Company and put FDEs inside customer organizations.”

The decision is on record: OpenAI announced the OpenAI Deployment Company on 11 May 2026 to embed Forward Deployed Engineers in organizations. Source 14OpenAI launches the OpenAI Deployment Company to help businesses build around intelligencePublisherOpenAISource typecompany blog For an enterprise services firm, the same move works with a different fact: TCS’s CEO set a target of at least 1% of employees in forward-deployed engineering roles on the July 2026 earnings call, as MIT Sloan Management Review India reports. Source 15Indian IT’s FDE Bet Will Not Be Proven by HeadcountPublisherMIT Sloan Management Review IndiaSource typenews report

The weak version drops the source and the window, and leaves you with no answer to “which data?” Rehearse the full answer with Why this company, and why now? and Why FDE and not software engineering?, out loud. Then try the free practice case. In the free practice case, the AI customer answers only what you ask. It needs a sign-in.

What the numbers do not tell a job seeker

No dataset in this post measures any of these:

Growth in postings tells you the door is wider than it was, not how many people are walking through it with you.

Use the numbers to decide where to look, then switch to evidence you can check yourself.

Turn the demand numbers into a search plan

  • Start from the employers with the most postings in one dated count, and add the ones you care about.
  • Search job sites by title, not keyword, and read each posting in full.
  • Note the date you read each posting, because postings close and reopen.
  • Sort each claim you meet into published, reported or unknown with the evidence map.
  • For each target, find the company’s own dated FDE decision and build your “why now” on it.
  • Drop any figure you cannot trace to a source, a window and a unit.

If you can only work remotely, filtering on a job site’s remote flag is not enough, because a posting marked remote can still ask for travel: read what “remote” means in an FDE posting before you filter. And whether the forward-deployed model outlasts the current wave is a separate question from whether postings grew: Is the forward deployed model here to stay? weighs what people who run FDE teams say.

Prepare for the job the numbers point at

The headlines agree that more employers are hiring for this role. What gets you hired is knowing the job and showing it in the loop. The FDE role, decoded is free and starts where this post leaves off: what FDEs do, who hires them under which titles, and why the role spread.

Questions people ask

How many FDE jobs are there, according to posting analyses?

Plank’s FDE census, a posting analysis updated in September 2026, collected 1,333 live FDE postings across 565 companies and treats every count as a floor. Plank also estimates that roles titled exactly forward deployed engineer number about 1,000 to 1,400 worldwide after de-duplication. Can you compare the FDE growth figures in news reports and analyses?

No. Each measures something different. In Bloomberry’s analysis, postings titled forward deployed engineer from January through October 2025 were up 1,165% on the same months of 2024. The Indeed figures reported by Business Insider are index values against a January 2025 baseline, not counts of posts. Does fast growth in FDE postings mean the jobs are easy to get?

No. None of these posting counts measures how many people apply or how many postings are filled, so growth in postings says nothing about your odds. Use the figures to decide where to look, and read each posting closely.
