You applied for a role at C3 AI, and the email in your inbox is a link to an AI interview, not a call with a person. Two candidates reported exactly that in August 2026, with a live coding round after it. The short answer: two candidates reported an AI interview before any live round in August 2026, and a third described a first screen with an FDE team lead. What this post rests on

C3 AI publishes a hiring process for the whole company, not an FDE round list. Everything below about the FDE rounds comes from candidates who posted on Reddit in August and September 2026, each labeled with who said it. Source 1C3 AI - Forward Deployed Engineer interview process (comment by u/BalanceOdd144)PublisherReddit r/leetcodeSource typecandidate report on RedditSource 6Careers | C3 AIPublisherC3 AISource typecompany job postingSource 7C3 AI FDE Interview Experience (Aug, 2026) (post by u/Leather_Music5550)PublisherReddit r/leetcodeSource typecandidate report on Reddit The advice on talking to an AI screener and the coding checklist are our method, not C3 AI’s rubric.

The AI screen: what it asks and how to talk to it

The reports say little about the questions. In a Reddit thread about C3 AI’s FDE process, one commenter, who did not name the company in their own comments, wrote in August 2026 that the AI interview “was a blend of both” technical and behavioral questions, with no LeetCode. Source 5C3 AI - Forward Deployed Engineer interview process (comment by u/FickleLingonberry873)PublisherReddit r/leetcodeSource typecandidate report on Reddit

How to talk to an AI interviewer

This is our method for any recorded or AI-run screen.

  • Answer in the first sentence. An AI interviewer may not ask the follow-up that rescues a slow start. Lead with the answer, then the example.
  • Make each answer complete on its own. Situation, what you did, the result and what you would change, in about a minute. Don’t leave the good part for a follow-up that may not come.
  • Be concrete. Name the system, the customer type, the data size and the result from your own work. “I built a dashboard” says nothing; “I cut the weekly reconciliation from a day to an hour” says what you did.
  • Say your assumptions out loud on a technical question: “I’ll assume the data fits in memory; if it doesn’t, I’d stream it.”
  • Buy a second, not a minute. “Let me structure that: two parts, the design and the trade-off.” Then give the two parts.
  • Rehearse on camera. Record three one-minute answers on your phone and watch them back: look at the lens, not your notes, and cut every answer that runs past a minute and a half.

What to have ready

Map your stories to the posting. The FDE postings ask for customer-facing delivery, full-stack work and AI familiarity, so prepare at least one story for each. Source 8Forward Deployed Engineer (Redwood City) | C3 AIPublisherC3 AISource typecompany job postingSource 9Forward Deployed Engineer, New Grad 2027 | C3 AIPublisherC3 AISource typecompany job posting

  1. Your intro, in about a minute, ending with why this role. Practice with the one-minute intro question.
  2. A customer story: a time you built something with, not just for, a customer.
  3. A technical deep dive: a system you built, its trade-offs, and what broke.
  4. An AI story: an LLM tool call, a prompt you iterated on, or an you evaluated. The New Grad posting names agentic AI architectures and LLM tool calling. Source 9Forward Deployed Engineer, New Grad 2027 | C3 AIPublisherC3 AISource typecompany job posting
  5. Why C3 AI: tie it to building AI applications for customers, which is how the postings describe the job. Source 8Forward Deployed Engineer (Redwood City) | C3 AIPublisherC3 AISource typecompany job posting

Here is the difference on a common prompt, “Tell me about a time requirements were unclear”, with a fictional project.

  • Weak: “I usually ask a lot of questions and stay flexible.”
  • Stronger: “On a data-migration project the customer asked for ‘real-time’ reports. I asked what decision the report fed, and it was a morning staffing call. We shipped an overnight batch in a week instead of a streaming pipeline in two months, and the customer signed off on the first review.”

The stronger answer has a situation, a question you asked, a decision and a result, and it would work with no follow-up at all.

Now the technical half. This is our practice prompt, not a question C3 AI is known to ask, tied to the LLM tool calling the New Grad posting names. Source 9Forward Deployed Engineer, New Grad 2027 | C3 AIPublisherC3 AISource typecompany job posting “Explain how LLM tool calling works.”

  • Weak: “The model can call APIs, so it can do things like look up data. It’s basically function calling.”
  • Stronger: “You give the model a list of tools, each with a name, a description and a JSON schema for its arguments. When a tool would help, the model returns a structured call instead of text. Your code runs the function, sends the result back, and the model uses it to answer. The engineering is in the parts the model doesn’t do: validating arguments, handling timeouts, and limiting what a tool is allowed to change.”

Use that shape for any technical idea in the posting: what it is, how it flows, and what goes wrong in production.

What C3 AI publishes about its hiring process

C3 AI’s careers page gives five stages for the whole company: application, screening, assessment, interview and offer, and it says a member of the hiring team conducts the initial screen. Source 6Careers | C3 AIPublisherC3 AISource typecompany job posting After the screen, it says, you may be sent a technical coding challenge or asked to complete a written assignment and presentation. Source 6Careers | C3 AIPublisherC3 AISource typecompany job posting Candidates who pass the assessment then have “a few interview rounds with managers and senior leaders”, by video or onsite. Source 6Careers | C3 AIPublisherC3 AISource typecompany job posting

The postings tell you what the rounds are checking for. C3 AI’s FDE postings describe building full-stack AI-driven web applications on the C3 AI Platform while working directly with customers on production applications, demos and proofs-of-technology. Source 8Forward Deployed Engineer (Redwood City) | C3 AIPublisherC3 AISource typecompany job posting The New Grad 2027 posting calls it a full-stack software engineering role with direct customer exposure, and asks for hands-on experience with data structures, algorithms, cloud computing, databases and profiling, plus familiarity with agentic AI architectures, prompt engineering or LLM tool calling. Source 9Forward Deployed Engineer, New Grad 2027 | C3 AIPublisherC3 AISource typecompany job posting

“Data structures and algorithms” in a posting is a plain hint that a coding round is coming.

The accounts differ. One candidate who reported an offer for a Senior FDE role in August 2026 described an initial screening with an FDE team lead, then coding, system design, a behavioral round, two reference checks and a final hiring-manager call. Source 3C3 AI Senior Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) Interview Process – My Experience (post by u/Wrong_Classic_7306)PublisherReddit r/OfferEngineeringSource typecandidate report on RedditSource 4C3 AI Senior Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) Interview Process – My Experience (comment by u/Wrong_Classic_7306)PublisherReddit r/OfferEngineeringSource typecandidate report on Reddit A second candidate reported, in August 2026, a 1-hour coding round and a 45-minute system design round back to back after the AI screen. So prepare for both an AI screen and a person, and for coding and design landing in the same sitting.

The coding round: medium problems where small errors cost

Candidates describe medium problems, the pattern the post on whether FDE interviews have LeetCode traces across employers. One candidate reported a LeetCode-medium hash-map problem for a Senior FDE role, another a medium sliding-window and hash-map problem on CodePair for an FDE role in Chicago, and a third a stack-based sliding-window problem, all in August 2026. Source 1C3 AI - Forward Deployed Engineer interview process (comment by u/BalanceOdd144)PublisherReddit r/leetcodeSource typecandidate report on RedditSource 2C3 AI Senior Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) Interview Process – My Experience (comment by u/speedy_string)PublisherReddit r/OfferEngineeringSource typecandidate report on RedditSource 3C3 AI Senior Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) Interview Process – My Experience (post by u/Wrong_Classic_7306)PublisherReddit r/OfferEngineeringSource typecandidate report on RedditSource 4C3 AI Senior Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) Interview Process – My Experience (comment by u/Wrong_Classic_7306)PublisherReddit r/OfferEngineeringSource typecandidate report on Reddit

Not every coding round was a classic puzzle. A commenter in a thread about C3 AI’s Senior FDE process wrote, in September 2026, that they got “a vague coding problem with very vague requirements and output expectations” and had to ask questions “as though an FDE would with a client”. Source 10C3 AI Senior Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) Interview Process – My Experience (comment by u/becquerwrecker)PublisherReddit r/OfferEngineeringSource typecandidate report on RedditSource 11C3 AI Senior Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) Interview Process – My Experience (comment by u/becquerwrecker)PublisherReddit r/OfferEngineeringSource typecandidate report on Reddit Practice that shape with the vague-requirements coding question.

The error that ended one process

One candidate, for the Chicago role, wrote that they “made a very small indentation error” and could not find it within the allotted time, and that the interviewer then told them they would not move forward. Source 1C3 AI - Forward Deployed Engineer interview process (comment by u/BalanceOdd144)PublisherReddit r/leetcodeSource typecandidate report on Reddit We don’t know what the error was. Here is a common one in Python, on a hash-map problem: find two invoices that add up to a disputed amount. Spot the bug before you read on.

def find_pair(amounts, target):
    seen = {}  # amount -> index
    for i, a in enumerate(amounts):
        if target - a in seen:
            return seen[target - a], i
        seen[a] = i
        return None

The return None sits inside the loop, so the function gives up after the first item and returns None for every input. Move it out one level and find_pair([40, 25, 60, 15], 75) returns (2, 3). The bug is easy to miss when you read the code, and caught by the first test you run.

Practice in the stack-based window family

We don’t know the exact stack-based problem that candidate got. A standard one in that family is the maximum of every window of k readings, solved with a deque that works like a stack at its back end.

from collections import deque

def window_max(xs, k):
    # dq holds indexes; values fall
    # from front to back
    dq, out = deque(), []
    for i, x in enumerate(xs):
        while dq and xs[dq[-1]] <= x:
            dq.pop()
        dq.append(i)
        if dq[0] <= i - k:
            dq.popleft()
        if i >= k - 1:
            out.append(xs[dq[0]])
    return out

window_max([3, 1, 4, 1, 5, 9, 2, 6], 3) returns [4, 4, 5, 9, 9, 9]. Each index enters and leaves the deque once, so it runs in O(n) time with O(k) extra space for the deque. Say that out loud before the interviewer asks.

For the hash-map and sliding-window pair, work through the longest non-repeating window question, set on a sensor log.

A coding checklist for CodePair

CodePair is HackerRank’s live coding pad, and one candidate reported their round ran on it. Source 1C3 AI - Forward Deployed Engineer interview process (comment by u/BalanceOdd144)PublisherReddit r/leetcodeSource typecandidate report on Reddit This checklist is ours; it applies to any live pad.

Before and during the coding round

  • Practice in a plain editor with autocomplete off, so the pad feels normal whatever it offers.
  • Pick your language in the pad’s menu before you type, and use spaces for indentation, never tabs. In Python, mixing the two can raise TabError: inconsistent use of tabs and spaces in indentation, or quietly nest a line where you didn’t mean it.
  • Restate the problem and ask about input size, empty input and duplicates before you code.
  • Write the smallest version that runs, then run it within the first few minutes on a two-line test.
  • Test the edge cases out loud: empty list, one item, all the same value, the answer at the very end.
  • When something fails, read the line number in the error first, then print the loop variables. Don’t reread the whole file.
  • Check where each return sits against its loop, the bug shown above.
  • State time and space complexity before you’re asked.
  • Keep talking. Say what you’re checking and why, so a slow minute still shows your reasoning.

Read the lesson on what FDE coding rounds test, then do two problems a day against a clock. The post on the FDE online assessment covers AI-run screens and coding pads at other employers.

The system design round

Two candidates described the design prompts. One candidate reported, in August 2026, being asked to design “Google Cars”, like Google Flights but for searching and comparing cars. Source 3C3 AI Senior Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) Interview Process – My Experience (post by u/Wrong_Classic_7306)PublisherReddit r/OfferEngineeringSource typecandidate report on RedditSource 4C3 AI Senior Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) Interview Process – My Experience (comment by u/Wrong_Classic_7306)PublisherReddit r/OfferEngineeringSource typecandidate report on Reddit A second candidate reported, in August 2026, designing an alerts system to detect malfunctions and anomalies in real time. Source 2C3 AI Senior Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) Interview Process – My Experience (comment by u/speedy_string)PublisherReddit r/OfferEngineeringSource typecandidate report on Reddit Not everyone got a full design round: a commenter in a thread about C3 AI’s Senior FDE process wrote, in August 2026, that they got a small design problem instead of system design. Source 12Comment on C3 AI Senior FDE interview threadPublisherReddit r/OfferEngineeringSource typecandidate report on Reddit

The alerts prompt fits the work the postings describe: AI-driven applications built with customers. Source 8Forward Deployed Engineer (Redwood City) | C3 AIPublisherC3 AISource typecompany job posting Here is a skeleton answer, our method:

  1. Ask who acts on the alert. A plant engineer on shift wants few, trustworthy alerts; a data team wants everything logged. That choice sets the whole design.
  2. Ingest. Sensors publish readings to a queue, keyed by asset, so each asset’s readings arrive in order and its rolling window lives on one worker. Rate-limit or sample a sensor that floods, so it doesn’t delay the assets sharing its partition.
  3. Detect. A stream processor keeps a rolling window per asset and flags readings outside a threshold or a rolling z-score. Start with rules the customer can read, and add a model once you have labeled incidents.
  4. Deduplicate and route. Group repeat alerts for the same asset into one open incident, then page the owner by severity.
  5. Close the loop. Record who acknowledged the alert and whether it was real. That label is your evaluation set for tuning thresholds later.
  6. Say what fails. Late or out-of-order readings, a sensor that goes silent (silence is also an alert), and alert fatigue.

The rolling-window detector in step 3 is the same pattern as the coding round. The lesson on why enterprise system design is different and the enterprise system design walkthrough show how to lead with the customer, not the boxes.

What is unknown

  • Where the AI screen sits. C3 AI’s page says a member of the hiring team conducts the initial screen. Source 6Careers | C3 AIPublisherC3 AISource typecompany job posting The reports don’t say how the AI interview maps onto the five published stages.
  • The AI screen’s format: video, voice or text, its length, and whether you can retry. The reports don’t say; read the invitation closely, or ask the recruiter.
  • How the AI screen is scored, and whether a person reviews it.
  • Whether AI tools are allowed in the live rounds. We found no C3 AI rule on it. The New Grad posting lists experience with developer AI workflows such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot and Claude Code as a preferred qualification, which is about the job, not the interview. Source 9Forward Deployed Engineer, New Grad 2027 | C3 AIPublisherC3 AISource typecompany job posting Ask your recruiter.
  • Whether you will get feedback. One candidate reported, in September 2026, that after a rejection the recruiter told them C3 AI does not provide candidate feedback. No employer publishes a pass rate, round weights or a typical timeline, so don’t trust anyone who quotes one for this loop. Read the evidence map lesson for how to weigh reports like these.

Your next step

If the AI interview is next, rehearse it first: say your intro and three stories out loud, one take each, as if no one will ask a follow-up. For the closest thing to talking to an AI, run the free AI practice case, where an AI plays a customer and you have to ask the questions.

Then work the coding questions against a timer, starting with the longest non-repeating window question, and run your code in the first few minutes.
